CLE Slides – April 4, 2017

After more than four years of drafting and debate, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was approved by the EU Parliament last spring. It came into force 20 days after its publication in the EU Official Journal and will directly apply in all members states on May 25, 2018. After this date, non-compliant organizations will risk heavy fines and regulatory scrutiny. We’ll discuss some of the top differences between the current law (the EU Directive) and the GDPR and what that means for US businesses. We’ll also discuss the newest data transfer mechanism available to US businesses, the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield, how it can benefit your clients and some of the differences between Privacy Shield and the invalidated Safe Harbor.
